Product Description

Carbtame contains insea2 brown seaweed extract. Insea2 inhibits both alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase activity in carbohydrate digestion, including the breakdown of sucrose, which then reduces carbohydrate absorption. A clinical trial published in 2011 in the journal applied physiology, nutrition and metabolism found that the ingestion of 500 mg insea2 supported a healthy glycemic response in healthy volunteers consuming 50g of carbohydrate in the form of white bread.

4No miracle cure for excess carbs
By Gerald Brainum
Since I write about health and nutrition, I viewed CarbTame with some interest. This interest was compounded by the fact that I am also pre-diabetic, and thus find any natural supplement that would help boost glucose control useful.I have used starch blocking supplements in the past that was based on beans. Similarly to the seaweed extract found in CarbTame, the bean-based blockers work by blocking an enzyme used by the body to digest starch. CarbTame differs in that it also is capable of blocking enzymes that digest sugar, as well as starch. So in effect, it should work on any type of carbohydrate food. I didn't like starch blockers because they caused gastrointestinal problems, such as gas and diarrhea, which is to be expected, since the supplement interferes with starch digestion. This allows undigested starch to accumulate in the gut, where it is fermented by intestinal bacteria. This is what causes the intestinal symptoms.I found a study that examined the use of CarbTame in animals published in 2011. In animals, the ingredients in CarbTame lowered plasma glucose following a meal by a whopping 90%, and lowered insulin secretion in response to the meal by an impressive 40%. How well it works in humans is another question.I found only one study that had human subjects, and the results were far more conservative compared to the animal study. I should also add that the animal study was done by people who work for the company that produces CarbTame (not Jarrow, who just sells it under their label).I think this supplement may produce a moderate control of elevated blood glucose following a meal. But the notion that you can take this supplement, then consume a ton of carbs and not get fat is fallacious at best. The good news is that, unlike starch blockers, this supplement is milder to the gut and doesn't produce the same degree of gastrointestinal discomfort as do starch blockers.I think this supplement may produce better results in terms of glucose and insulin control for some people more than others. But here's a little tip for you: if you consume the majority of your carb intake prior to, and just after exercise, none of the carbs you consume will be converted into fat.Athletes and bodybuilders have known this for years.Another point to remember is that carbs themselves are not "fattening" unless you eat more than you burn through activity.Considering all this, perhaps the best use of CarbTame would be when you consume an unusually large amount of carbs at one time.

4Cautiously Optimistic
By K. McGee
I am a non-insulin dependant type 2 diabetic. As per my doctor, in order to (hopefully) avoid diabetic complications later in life, I should try to keep my sugar/carbs to no more than 20 grams most days. This is much less than the American Diabetic Association says I can have but as per my physician, they are too lax if you want to avoid complications and as I worked in healthcare for over 15 years and saw first hand the ravages of diabetes, I believe him. There are over 11 grams of carbs in a cup of milk. There are over 20 grams in a medium banana. There are even carbs in carrots so it doesn't take long to reach my 20 gram limit.Since I don't take insulin, my only way to control blood glucose spikes is to exercise as soon as I see a spike coming on. This is a pain in the neck sometimes because if I decide to have a glass of wine while at a holiday party then what am I supposed to do? Run around the block a bunch of times in my high heels after drinking the wine??I see a review here by an insulin dependant diabetic who thought there isn't enough "bang for your buck" from these pills. With all due respect, that might apply if you are taking insulin but for me every little bit helps. I see they tried this experiment with yogurt. I won't eat yogurt because the tiny little container has a whopping 35 grams of carbs and that's almost 2 days worth for me. I rarely eat what I refer to as "extraneous carbs" such as bread, rice, potatoes. Those are all carbs I can avoid. Harder to avoid are the ones in vegetables because the bulk of my diet is veggies. I eat about a 60/40 split of vegetables and protein. I also rarely eat fruit and I avoid sugar free foods that contain Maltodextrin as it spikes my blood glucose worse than white sugar or white bread.Maltodextrin can be found in sugar free Jello mixes, sugar free Jello pudding mixes, many sugar free coffee creamers and coffee drink mixes and even in some salty snack foods that claim to be low carb.In any case, I tried these and they do lower blood glucose spikes. On one day I ate a small baked potato with my normal dinner of steamed veggies and a 6 ounce serving of protein (it was chicken on that day). My blood glucose prior to eating was 87 and then I tested every 30 minutes for 2 hours. It went from 87 (within normal limits) to 182. Anything beyond 120 is not really good. The next day I ate the exact same meal only 30 minutes before eating, I took 2 capsules of the CarbTame. Prior to eating my blood glucose was 84 and it climbed to 142. Still a bit over what I'd like but I got to eat a potato! I won't be doing this often but it's nice to know that I can sometimes indulge and not have my blood glucose spike so high and that means not having to do an additional 30-60 minutes on the treadmill - that's in addition to the 60 minutes I already do daily at my target heart rate.I wanted to test this further with other foods like fruit or bread to see if there was a difference but in the midst of my testing I caught a bad cold that I'm still recovering from. As soon as I can, I'm going to test further and if I notice anything remarkable, I'll update this review. As things stand right now, I like this product and I'm most likely going to be using it occasionally especially when I don't have as much control over what I eat - like when I'm at someone else's house for dinner, etc.

3Needs more bang for the buck
By F. D. Gillett
The description of this product sounds almost too good to be true and it probably is. Before I go forward with my review I need to preface a few things so you know how I was able to arrive at my conclusions.First of all I'm a diabetic so I monitor my blood sugar very closely. As carbohydrates are injested they turn into glucose to provide energy to the body and are distributed by the bloodstream. The glucose levels rise over the next few hours and then begin to drop off. Ingesting more carbs than you body needs result in the sugars being stored as fat. In a healthy person the pancreas provides the body with its own insulin to moderate the sugars. In my case, I have to rely on injections of insulin. That was a too simple explaination which most of you already know. So, on to the results I experienced. On the bottle the following information is provided: "A clinical trial.....found the ingestion of 500 mg InSea supported a healthy glycemic response in healthy volunteers consuming 50 g of carbohydrates in the form of white bread." So what exactly does that mean? It supports a normal response or does it have an active effect going beyond what a normal, healthy body would do?InSea is the proprietary name of the active ingredient in CarbTame. 50 g of carbohydrates would be the equivalent of a light meal. 500 mg of InSea is double the suggested amount of InSea for a regular meal; on the bottle they suggest 2 capsules can be taken if planning to eat a heavy meal. What I found by checking my blood glucose levels after eating is that CarbTame (250 mg dose) had only a small effect on the glucose spike that I experience a few hours after eating. What it seemed to do was moderate the absorption of the carbohydrates rather than totally block them. So my results indicated that my glucose didn't spike quite as high after eating (I used a tub of yogurt as my test food) but it came far from what I had hoped for. My results over the last week showed perhaps a 5% drop in blood glucose after eating the yogurt. 5% isn't very much considering the tub of yogurt contained only 33 carbs. But, it is a decrease.Personally I don't think I could live on 2 tubs of yogurt a day until my weight loss goals are met and it certainly would not be a very healthy diet. Since this is only my own trial and there may have been many variables, my results may not be the same as those of a clinical trial in which variables are tightly controlled.Okay, the reason I gave the product three stars is as follows: I showed only a very minimal decrease in blood glucose but by Jarrow's standards I would not be considered healthy because of my diabetes. I take a long acting insulin once a day which may or may not have an effect on the way CarbTame works. A 5% drop in carb absorption to me doesn't justify the expense of the product. The same results could be achieved by taking one or two fewer bites of a healthy, well-balanced meal.So to you dieters out there.....forget those thougts of taking this product and being able to have those cookies and treats at the upcoming Christmas parties this year, there just isn't enough bang for the buck.
